I have a degree in civil and environmental engineering with a structural specialization. I have on year of experience in structural engineering and limited experience in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering in building control panels for heavy machinery at a separate job than the structural engineering. I am interested in volunteer work abroad that would take advantage of this background. Ideally I would like my travel and living situation taken care of while I volunteer my time, but I have noticed that doesn't seem to be too common. Thank you for any suggestions.

You can contact Leave UR Mark as they have volunteer work in India that helps make use of people with engineering backgrounds. Basically, you'd be working alongside a mechanical engineering team who has so far trained 38 foreign student engineers in irrigation and rainwater harvesting, urban and rural rainwater harvesting, bore-well recharging, recycling of used water for underprivileged communities and villages in Southern India. You would be working towards using engineering, technology, and education to save India's precious water for both it's urban and rural population.

How many years does it usually take to get a degree in Computer Engineering?

I'm a first year at a community college and i just figured out that i want to do computer engineering. According to the counselor I have to do 2 more years at the community college to finish all the lower division classes and be able to transfer. So by the time I finish with that it will be 3 years and then would it take another 2 years to finish my degree at the university i transfer to? I heard it takes about 4-5 years average for an engineer degree. Anyone have any info?

I took full semesters both fall and spring with full summers too and it will take me 4 1/2 years to graduate with a Bachelors Degree in electrical engineering. Most of my friends are finishing up in 5 years. It is rarely done in 4 years and this is why engineering majors tend to get higher starting salaries. I would advise you to get either a mechanical, electrical or biomedical degree because a computer engineer will more likely get outsourced. This means that you really dont need the engineer at the workplace so you can hire someone from literally china to do the same work. Computer engineers to a lot of programming and this is the main reason why.
Starting salary for most engineering degrees are around 60K and this comes from what some of my friends are earning who graduated in may
