My cousin just got a new laptop, and he's got the new and old ones sitting side by side. The old one is connected to his network just fine, but the new one doesn't even display the network to connect at all. They're both displaying other networks, the only one missing is HIS network on the NEW computer.
Very basic info, yeah, but anyone have any insight?

Sounds like the network isn't broadcasting its SSID. Since the old computer may have had the network manually entered, it knows how to find it, but the new computer doesn't know to look for it. Try manually adding it, or configure the wireless router to broadcast its SSID.

what if they have your ip address and all other sorts of info about your computer? this one guy in chat who doesn't like me and many others was displaying someones ip and their computer hardrive info and all kinds of things.

There are three ways to prevent hacking. One is to not have anything on your computer. Doesn't really do much good to have the computer, but it works.
Two is to have a really good firewall and/or anti-virus. But we all know that everything is hackable by someone with enough knowledge and determination.
Three is to separate the system. A system that is not plugged into another system is only hackable by someone physically at the computer. Unless you let the hacker into where you keep the computer or the computer is stolen, it cannot be hacked. Even then a good firewall wouldn't hurt. It would at least make the hacker work for it.
There is a fourth way, but it does as much good as option one. Turn the machine off. Machines have to be running to be hacked. Again, it makes a nice paperweight.
