I would like to take my old desktop to Best Buy for recycling. I can't wipe my hard drive the normal way because the desktop no longer works. What would be the best way to make sure I don't recycle my confidential info? Is it hard to remove the hard drive?

You could format the drive multiple times, or remove it and putting it in an external drive case. That can be used on a new computer if you buy one.

I suspect my male, unemployed housemate is getting on my computer while I'm at work and looking through my things. He used to be a computer programmer, so I feel like he can get past my Windows password screen ... somehow. I already know he goes into my room while I'm gone all day, and I need something to track my computer activity while I'm not there so I can catch him.

If you are using Windows, there is a section where you can view all recent files opened, such as Pictures, or music played. I don't recall the specific area it is in.. And I have mine hidden.. But, I'll try to find it and provide you with that information.
Ah, search 'Event Viewer' in the search bar presented upon clicking the 'Start' button.
Explore that page for a bit until you understand it. It lists dates and times of activities.
I know there is another section of Windows which presents activity in a different way than 'Event Viewer' but I'll have to find it..
* AH-HA! Found it.. This one is much less aesthetically crippling.. Go to your search bar and type 'Searches'. Click on the option it brings up under 'Programs'.
It should bring you to a page that gives you these folder options:
Indexed Locations.
Recent Documents.
Recent E-Mail. And so-forth.
Now, click on 'Recent Music', for example. It will show a list of songs you have played with WMP, recently. (NOTE, it only shows songs you double clicked to play, or right clicked and chose 'Add To WMP list.' It will not show songs played using the 'Play-All' option.)
You can also see pictures recently viewed.. This is a dead give away. If there is a picture listed on this page, that you haven't viewed recently, it was most likely your housemate viewing it. =0
I have actually modified this list on my own computer to such an extend that the factory settings are no longer in effect, so I'm kind of providing this information from memory. Though, I believe The small amount of info I've provided is correct.

* Additional info: 'Indexed Locations' provides a list of all files accessed. And, even presents a preview of photos viewed EVEN IF YOU'VE DELETED THE PHOTO from its folder AND THE RECYCLING BIN! If you maneuver your mouse on to the column titled 'Name' and right click, it will present a drop-down menu. Select 'More' and you can select additional columns to be added to your list, such as 'Date Accessed', and many other options.
