Size, for one. Those old vacuum tube radio transmitters and receivers were huge. We in the ham radio community sometimes buy and restore them as part of our hobby - but even we refer to them as boat anchors.
Another consideration is stability. Even tubes made adhering to the highest quality standards tend to drift off frequency - when new, it's minimum, but as they age, it becomes a real problem.
Then there's heat: those vacuum tubes got hot - and a good radio or t.v. set that depended on them got real warm - and that would cause much more rapid degradation of surrounding components. One solution was to install cooling fans - not a terribly bad idea, as you'll see said fans in many modern desktop computers - but that added to the unwanted noise from the rig and increased the power demands of the device - in commercial applications in particular, that could be a significant expense, 'cause electricity ain't free.
The first electronic computer used hundreds and hundreds of vacuum tubes - and the damn things were down as often as they were working. And they were huge - filling large rooms - and produced immense amounts of waste heat, and demanded many watt-hours of electricity. And they could only do basic arithmetic - add, subtract, multiply and divide - though when running, could do it very fast. Your almost-antique palm pilot could do the same functions just as rapidly - and you know how much else it could do. And look at the latest droid and it's rivals - those damn things can do almost everything your desktop, notebook or netbook can do - and it's all because of transistors.
