Why does my computer turn itself on?
Q. Okay. So I turn my computer off and go to bed. After about an hour or so, I wake up hearing this loud noise: It's my computer turning on by itself. I then have to get up and turn it back off. Why does this come on by itself? It wakes me. It's creepy. Is it possessed by a demon or something? Lately I've been unplugging the thing so it stays off but I forget sometimes. Still, why and how does it turn on by itself?
Answer
Have your tried calling a priest ?
Hehehe, just kidding 1 you might have one of those, unusual to find, computers which have a WakeOnLan device which allows them to turn on when sensing some info from the net. The "net" could be the internet or another computer in your own network.
Notice that anyway this is not normal. This is designed to be able to remotely turn on computers for some people that needs to work with, usually, servers.
It could also be that somehow your computer got infected by a virus which alters the BIOS with some code to remotely turn it on (or to more nasty stuff). Check out in the BIOS if you have a WakeOnLan (WakeUp ROM) in the menu and if so disable it.
Besides this, there is no other possible way to turn on a computer.
P.S. Have your checked if your cat is playing a joke on you ? maybe he's trying to watch kitties when you got to sleep. ;)
