What are DOS attacks still valid on?
Can they be used to attack a home PC if the person knows my IP address?
Answer
If a computer hacker live your area, it could cause heavy damage your life or your PC(if it's wireless). they can use dos command to kill your PC by sending certain codes. I know them and I only use them at work for personal reasons.
If can you want more info on IP address, I add couple link for you:

What can I do to make my internet run faster?

thrillhous
Is there anything I can do without buying anything to make my internet run faster. I would also prefer it if I didn't have to download any programs or anything, but feel free to suggest that.
Also, will clearing my hard drive improve computer and internet performance?
And just t clear things up, I'm already using a broadband router and we have 12 gb of downloads per month. Apart from that, I know almost nothing about computers.
Answer
You can ask this in the computer section at busy point of day which would be around 11 am EST. Other things you can do is:
Hold windows key and press R, brings up windows run command.
type cmd, to bring up dos cmd and type ipconfig to see if anyone is sharing your wireless without permission. It will have your default, router, and unknown if an outsider is on.
windows key + r and type these commands and run one at a time and let each complete and it should make your computer a bit faster.
Check Disk Utility type chkdsk
Disk Cleanup Utility type cleanmgr
Disk Defragment type dfrg.msc
run 1 at a time in that order is best get rid of anything you can I can't judge that. If your system finds any bad sectors on the hard drive it will start ignoring that part and skip over it. Defragmenting just puts files back in order for the fastest way for the laser to read the info. and allow the processor to translate it.
The guy above me mentioned finally fast and it does the same thing but they charge for it. However it's a registry cleaner as well and that can be tricky with or without the software so study up on which registry files you can delete.
You can also save your Important files to a USB drive and just restore your computer to factory settings is what I do when my computer gets too bogged down.
Hope that helps you out.
You can also go into and run by typing msconfig (follow the steps above) and turn off any unnecessary start-up items or processes that you don't need. Some being in mind is Yahoo or MS messenger. Stop anything with AIM in it, I hate AOL. Just look through there and find anything you don't need to start. Keep in mind that disabling them from Startup doesn't mean you can't use them. It just means they don't run automatically in the background.
