computer and info systems manager canada image

:)
i'm sick of it. i keep getting these!
if you can answer any of these it would be appreciated!
1. how do they get names and emails
2. where can i report them
3. if i report it will anything be done
4. is there any way to stop them aside from making a new email
5. do you have this problem/ a story about these type of scams?
6. is anyone doing anything about this!?
to clarify this is about the scams where people in other countries (usually in Africa) say they have money to give you and they ask for your credit card info or bank account numbers to transfer the money. and obviously they steal your info and money which then becomes untraceable and apparently untouchable in the other country.
Answer
The so called NIgerian scams are now coming from all over the world.
1. they really do not get your names individually. For a fee anyone can buy a list of supposedly good email addresses. Your address and sometimes your name is all over the web, everyones is.
2. If you are in the US you can report them to the FTC.
3. It does absolutely no good but they maintain a site since idiot congresspersons felt that something should be done. It is a waste of resources. The scammers use disposable addresses and work from anonymous computers in computer "cafes"
4. no, they change addresses often and there are thousands of them, it costs them almost nothing to send millions of emails.
5. I receive at least 10 a week. I have never had a problem since I ignore them but I took a report from and elderly M.D. who ended up sending a couple of thousand by wire to Canada. The Canadian authorities could not find anything and there was no way to trace, so people do fall for the scams, that is why they are popular. If one out of 10 million emails sent falls for it in any way the scammer is way ahead.
6. In countries like Nigeria they do not have the resources. In some places the local manager of the internet cafes are charged with trying to detect someone misusing the email system.
It is like 3 card monty being played on the corner, It has been going on for a long time (monty for at least 500 years) people still fall for it and as long as people are greedy and think they can get something for nothing scammers will prevail.
