I really need to get some files from my computer. What should I do?
I have Windows Vista.

Answer
Either your bios, windows is corrupt or your hard drive broke. Order of most likely problems 1. Windows corrupt. You may have had a virus. 2. Your harddrive crashed. (Your info is unrecoverable) 3. Bios is corrupt (unlikely)

First check if the hard drive works. Start the computer and listen closely for the harddrive. Normally you will hear some clicking sounds.

Most common problem is that vista is messed up. You can access your personal files using a live cd. A live cd is an operating system that runs strictly from a cd that you pop in the drive. Download Ubuntu Linux iso and burn it on a cd. Pop in the cd and boot the computer. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. It is quite different from windows and takes a while to get used to. However, if the harddrive still works, you will be able to access your files on the harddrive and copy them to either an external harddrive or a flash drive. Once copied, you will be able to reinstall your windows disk and reformat the harddrive. Be careful, if windows was corrupted with a virus, the files you copied to the flash drive might have the virus and your computer will get corrupt again. You will have to start all over again.

How to remove this malware from my computer?

I've had my laptop for 2-3 years. I have had no problems up until yesterday. My computer is now infected with Trojan downloader and something called blaster worm. I can't open anything such as documents, Internet, and even my spyware terminator is infected. I tried running avast Internet security but it won't fix it because my trial has expired. I don't have a lot of money to get my laptop fixed right now let alone spend 60 dollars on Internet security. Is there any other way to fix this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
This covers checking for a virus. If needed, to recover your files and restore it back to factory setting.

You can try ESET online scanner to check for a virus. Below is a link for the instructions on how to do it online in safe mode. This will find the more easier one and get rid of them.

If you have a real stubborn virus or wish to check for the kind of virus that can hide from the normal virus scanners, use the directions below.

First thing to try is to run RKill. The first link below discusses how it works and it is VERY IMPORTANT to read this page. The second link is for the virus removal guides offered by Bleepingcomputer. You will need another puter to download RKill and malwarebytes. You will need both of them on a thumb drive, DVD or a CD. RKill has different filenames because some malware will not allow processes to run unless they have a certain filename. Therefore when attempting to run RKill, if a malware terminates it please try a different filename. READ the instruction carefully on how to use the programs together.

If all else fails you will need to try to recover your data and files. If you can not boot into Windows to make a backup of your files then you can go to the link below and read on how to download a Linux Live CD to boot the system to recover what you want. If you have a Windows 8 puter then you need to turn of secure boot before using the CD. The live CD will also allow you to check out the rest of the puter. It helps to have a thumb drive or a external drive to copy your data and files to.

After you get your data backed up you can restore it back to factory settings. When you press the power button start tapping the F key that is for your puter and the BIOS menu will open. Select the recovery and it will set your puter back to factory settings. Depending on your puter this will take one to two hours.

Manufacturers BIOS menu F key

HP/Compaq ESC

Sony F2

ASUS Del

Gateway, eMachines F10

Acer, Dell, Fijitsu, Gigabyte, Toshiba F12

Your BIOS menu should look something like this. Yours might be different. I am posting this to give you an idea of what it looks like.

F1 = System Info

F2 = System Diagnostic

F9 = Boot Device options

F10 = BIOS Setup

F11 = System recovery
