I want to upgrade my computer. I have a windows XP compaq computer with about 20.9 gigabytes left. It used to be an office computer but it was passed to my family.
Also if I install windows 7 are my programs at risk of being deleted?

Answer
to run windows seven you need to look at the
- RAM
1 gig is not recommended
2 gig is fine and dandy for budget
3-4 gig is the standard line if you can spend extra
more than that is considered a waste, unless you are a pro at doing some very serious processing stuff with your computer

but its not only that,
you better have look at other aspects as well,
- HARD DISK size (total space, not whats left in free space)
40 gig is a minimum,
its ok if you already got one of these
but if anything lower, i would suggest you buy another larger hard drive
80 gig is fine
can go up to 500 gig or 1 terabyte depend on your usage needs and budget
careful which type your laptop can support
SATA or IDE,
if you dont know what is the difference, you better ask a friend who is familiar to help
or simply google the phrase

and yes, if you are upgrading the Operating System to Win7
the programs will have to be reinstalled,
there are alternatives to reuse the previous installation but i do not recomend it,
it WILL cause alot of bugs and crashes despite the promises of Microsoft.
a clean install is best,

get a usb storage device and copy all the documents you want to keep onto it.

but before you decide,
there is another aspect you need to look at,
the graphic card,
Win7 require at least a standard graphic interface with substantial performance,
if you bought your laptop within these 3-4 years, you are safe.
otherwise, post another question and include the info of your graphic.

My usb stick has several viruses on it, but I really need the info off it. What can I do?

I'm afraid to put it in my new computer because I don't want to give my computer any viruses, but I really, really need to get several documents off of it.

Answer
Vista and specially win7 machines never caught viruses. So try finding one and taking what you need from USB stick would be so damn easy (Copy & Paste). If your friend is an advanced user he/she might even remove the viruses from the flash memory without the need for an antivirus or caution during the process.
