I want to play the computer version of Minecraft VERY badly, but my Dad and I are afraid it will give his computer a virus. His computer is the only computer I use in my house and he's very protective with it. Also, there's a mod I want to try out on the game. Is there a computer I can buy that I can download Minecraft onto and install mods without getting a virus?
Answer
Hi there Katie,
Short Response: No, there's no computer that is always virus free, but Minecraft is.
Longer Response: First, I'd like to talk to you a little about the basics of a computers and viruses. Computers all have what we call an operating system, this is what you see when you boot your computer, the operating system loading. It's the main difference between Apple and PC's. Otherwise with out this operating system you have nothing but a lot of part and metal. The other important part is that you have what is called a hard drive. A hard drive is basically where you store all your data, where everything is saved. When you go on to the web, you are at risk of getting a virus or becoming subjugated to other malicious attacks. This is the nature of the beast because all computers have hard drives that can be infected. However, it is very unlikely that you get a virus from just surfing the web. Where people really get in trouble is when they download items like Minecraft onto there computer. Remember your hard drive is where everything is saved so when you download Minecraft that's where it will go. Anything with a virus can then attack everything thats on your computer and even your operating system cussing your computer fatal damage because like we have established previously, a operating system is where is put together and displayed for you. Without you would be looking at a black screen which is what some viruses can do. They can also steal info and phish all your e-mails and online transactions. Having said all this there is NO computer on earth that is 100% guaranteed to not get a virus unless you never download anything or connect to the web. However, Minecraft is a safe download. Millions of people can confirm. You have nothing to worry about as long as you download Minecraft from its creators website, Minecraft.net. You'll also notice that Minecrafts website has an encrypted HTTPS website so putting you info in should be safe. Mods can be dangerous. Make sure that you download mods that are popular and have alot of downloads. Also I would stick to planetminecraft and minecraftforums to download mods from. Those two should be fairly safe especially if they have alot of downloads. There are a couple of things you can do to keep your computer extra safe if you are very nervous about its being. Install a security sweet. There are lots of great ones out there. Overall, there is NO danger in downloading minecraft from its source, but mods could be potentially dangerous because they too have access to you hardrive to a certain extent. If your dad is still not sure have him read this and if he wants send me a couple of messages with any questions. Also if you're looking to buy a computer that can run minecraft, you shouldn't have to spend more than 300$. Check out Best Buys website, Microcenter, or whatever you prefer. Just look for a good processor as thats what minecraft mainly relies on and preferably 4 GB of ram.

If you RIGHT-CLICK my computer and hit properties..the cpu (in ghz) is displayed and also the amount of RAM..If you have prev bought a video card it will be on the box..if its still maufactured then u can go to the home website for the and they will also have all the info for you there..if you're worried about hard drive space you can right click start...hit explore..then right click c: drive and properties and that will show you the amount of space taken/remaining on the drive....hope this helps :D
