Can i get access the computer through Ip address?

Danish

I have got the ip address of a particular computer. Now, can i get access to that machine by connecting to the internet, if yes then how? Please explain and give the source of info where i can get the info and tools to do that.
Thanx

Answer
If the machine is set up to allow access, then sure.
Some methods are Microsoft's Remote Desktop (aka Terminal Services Client) > mstsc
Commercial products like GoToMyPC , LogMeIn, VNC, and many more..

For a *nix machine, you might be able to connect using SSH and run a command prompt.
If it has a web server, just open a browser to http://ip address

Basically, if you know the machine is on, you know there is a program waiting for a connection, (you know the operating system - since that dictates what programs could be waiting), and the firewall is configured to allow access.. AND -you are an authorized user... you are in.

Other programs that might answer you include Ping, Finger, Telnet, tracert/traceroute, http (get), ftp, many others.

If you aren't an authorized user or are trying to crack(bad hacking).. that is illegal, and anyone who helps you could be in the cell next to you in your favorite Federal prison.
Keep in mind that even Windows is capable of logging every attempt to access. Further, your ISP, and the target ISP probably keep some kind of traffic logs. Any security program or any security person will find an "explorer" fairly quickly if they look.

sending info from one computer to another?

I have a home computer but have not signed up with an ISP.
I use a terminal at my local library for email/ searching.
Am I correct in thinking that every computer terminal has a specific numbered address? If so can I send info from the library terminal to my home terminal and how do I do it using the numbered addresses?

Answer
The IP (internet protocol) addresses only work if you are networked.

Although your idea is on the right track, there are a number of reasons it won't work.

A) IP address don't work like snail mail. You can't just punch in an address and connect. You have to have a network between those two computers, with a router or a crossover cable between them.

B) Even if you did have some type of connectivity a home, the library wouldn't let you connect to their computers on that level. It poses a significant security risk.

So here's a better idea:

Get a usb thumb drive (down to about $10 at officemax) and move your data that way.

Or if they let you burn CDs, but a $.25 CD and burn your info and take it with you.
