and please explain what you do
i really mean a high paying, successful career - one that would require a few years at a university to be one

Answer
According to the US Dept of Labor, these are the some of the fastest growing occupations for 2004-2014 (they usually require a bachelors degree and usually make over $43,000):

1) Computer scientists and network systems and data communications analysts (maintain the company's pc's links to the internet, company data, & printers, as well as the telephone equipment)

2) & 3) Computer software engineers, applications and systems software (create the software that compiles the programs that run applications like payroll or create the operating system software that runs the computer once it's turned on)

4) Network and computer systems administrators (Manages the people who design and maintain the company staff pc's so they can access the internet, company data, printers)

5) Computer scientists and database administrators (Design, update and maintain all the company data, that usually feeds a company's product management system and displays customer info online)

6) Computer systems analysts (design the whole computer system from top to bottom, like a customer service system)

Of course, if you become a manager of any of jobs listed above, your pay goes way up!

Here's the link to the descriptions of what people do in each one of these careers: http://www.bls.gov/oco/oco1002.htm

Good luck!

Fate

pretty broad question, I know. But ive asked a couple of questions on the subject and there seem to be a few guys that know their cookies. So what is this major all about? What are some of the disciplines i will be able to choose from, and what kind of jobs will this present for me opposed to a BS in CS?

Answer
I think it's time to consult wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_engineering

...as far as CE compared to CS... the kinds of jobs it will open up to that CS will not prepare you for are hardware design(digital circuit design) jobs or embedded systems software(google that if needed...software for chips in devices instead of PCs...think planes, cars, toasters, washers, cell phones, industrial robots, etc... I think you get the picture...anything you can stick a chip in to make it "smart")
... CE may also prepare you better to write operating system drivers and other PC low level software.

If you really want to go hardcore hardware you should do EE. It seems like CE is usually more involved in designing chips at a behavioral level, like what logic gates will be needed and in what configuration while EE is involved more in the floorplan of a chip and making sure the actual silicon does what it's supposed to. imo CE will not understand the electrical properties of the silicon quite as well as EE.

.....IN SUMMARY: the key to understanding what CE does is just to remember that they do hardware design(designing circuits)) and they also do software but the software is of the type that is more closely associated with hardware, that makes hardware itself or whatever is hooked up to a processor "do stuff" that is more tangible or can be seen for lack of a better term, ...whether it's directly changing registers in a processor or making a robot move or a car's brakes engage or something like that.. making things/devices "smart".. CS usually writes more software of the form that would execute on a regular PC(word processors, software development programs, etc...), not really on embedded software like CE.

There's usually some overlap though no matter what you choose and these descriptions aren't always so concrete, just general.
