Q. After downloading many great independently made games, I was inspired to make games by myself. I would like to make 2D games because, 3D is too hard. I'm fairly good at animating with the programs Photoshop and Graphics Gale, but need to know how to program. What are some books you would recommend for learning C++ for games?

Any recommendations for a novice buying her first computer? Are there any great books or other info sources ?
lo-j-lo
I want to buy the right stuff and become and expert on the basics of computer ownership and use. I was reading, "How to Buy a Computer for the Complete Idiot," but I still seems way complicated. Some writers/teachers have a real gift in organizing and presenting information in an interesting way. Does anyone have any suggestions in this area? Thanx.
Answer
You basicly want a companion book to go along with your new computer so you can learn how to operate it properly.
If you are planning on buying a computer with Microsoft Vista, you can try the "dummy's" or "idiot's guide" books or one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Absolute-Beginners-Guide-Microsoft-Windows/dp/0789735768/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213906746&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-VISUALLY-Windows-Vista/dp/0470045736/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213906746&sr=1-8
If you are planning to get a Mac:
http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-VISUALLY-Leopard-Tech/dp/0470101679/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213907350&sr=1-1
And lastly, for general computer knowledge, it is geared a little more towards Windows Vista than Mac but is general information and in it's 4th printed edition:
http://www.amazon.com/Absolute-Beginners-Guide-Computer-Basics/dp/078973673X/ref=pd_sim_b_2
I'm sure you can also find these books at other book retailers like Barnes & Noble or Borders, so you can browse before you buy.
Just be careful when you finally go shopping for a computer, bring someone who knows(really knows) about computers. Many salespeople are not experts on the products but they are experts on which computers have the highest profit. Also, most computers in the stores are several months old, technology-wise, but for a beginner, it doesn't make a huge difference. When you are ready for your second computer, in a few years, you'll be more savvy.
Good luck with your new PC!
