I think my computer is/was hacked. How could I prevent this?

Kurt

I don't know or remember when it started, but a few days ago, I noticed some strange activity on my computer. The mouse would move by itself but then, just recently, I noticed one night when I was watching a movie, the mouse would move by itself, open a new tab, and text would start being typed (not by me) and go to the site. It was strange and I changed from AVG to Microsoft Security just yesterday and I thought it would have solved my problem but it didn't. I got really annoyed and tired of this so right when the person would try to go on my comp (eg. Go to YouTube and start a video) I went to the browser and typed "GET OUT OF MY COMPUTER. PLEASE" (or something like that) and then a chat box showed up (I think from Command Prompt) and the person asked me if I would want him to leave me alone. He said that his virus would be deleted after this conversation and the chat box then disappeared. I'm still not sure if it has been done or not but I'm worried that this sort of thing may happen again. (Apparently, when I was using AVG, it told me that the virus couldn't be quarantined or fixed, when I tried Microsoft Security, it worked but the same virus came back afterwards.) Please help me/ tell me what's wrong? How could this have happened? What can I do to prevent this in the future? Thank you.

Answer
Well its not a virus. People cant take control of your computer with a virus... A virus is a self duplicating file that infects your computer.

The only way someone can remotely control your computer is via a backdoor trojan, which is labeled as malware. Anti-VIRUS programs are made for VIRUSES not malware. Though many of them will help block, scan for or try to remove malware, its not their main purpose, so you cant expect much.

What you need to do is get an anti-malware program.
Now one that is free and excels VERY well in this category is malwarebytes. http://malwarebytes.com get the free version (which will allow you to scan for and remove malware).

Now you may need to boot into safe mode to be able to install/scan with it if your computer is being taken control of. (to boot into safe mode, spam the F8 key after the manufacturer splash screen when you turn on your computer, if you see windows loading, restart try again).
Choose safe mode or safe mode with networking.
Then install and update and scan with malwarebytes.

Once you get rid of it, i would suggest getting/using:

Avast free AV ( http://avast.com ) + malwarebytes (link above) + comodo free firewall ( http://comodo.com )
With the combination of the 3, you have pretty much the best free protection you can get.

Now you can take a few extra steps.
Get sandboxie ( http://www.sandboxie.com/ ) and run your browser or any suspicious .exe through that. (anything run in the sandbox will not affect your computer, so even if you download and run a virus, once you close the sandbox, its gone).
Now remember it only works if you run the software through the sandbox. And also while using the sandbox you will get pop up when files are being modified, and whether you want to move the files outside of the sandbox to your computer or keep them in the sandbox. (you will want to save them to your hard drive if you are downloading something).

And then using broswer addons such as WOT (for ratings of sites, so you know what to stay away from) and ABP (ad blocker plus, to block ads which can contain malicious sites and java scripts).

Also you always want to make sure you have the latest windows updates, and you update flash and adobe reader (as those 2 pieces of software are very high security risks, and manipulated easily) updated to patch security holes.

EDIT: lol @ above people spamming their shit software...
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/lockmydrive.com has no rating, so its likely new/not too popular. And the fact its software for password protecting files,a dn completely unrelated spam...

And http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/www.virushandler.com also has no rating, but also looking into the whois data, it seems fake. Any domains who give fake or no info are not legit.

Also AVG = scareware... it labels EVERYTHING as a virus... (im not joking it labels cookies as a viruses, try it, scan your computer "remove the so called probably thousands of viruses it found" then go to yahoo.com, rescan and you will have more viruses, because you just got cookies from yahoo...as every site you visit will give you cookie files... and cookies are not harmful in any way...)

Can the FBI lock your computer remotely.?

John

Ive been looking around on the web and ive seen that when there is some fairly common malware with many variations that locks the computer saying its the FBI and asks for money. However the one that locked mine said id been illegally download movies (i dont think so but my son might have been), opened a new tab that looked officially in the background, and a popup that couldnt be closed over that tab, i also couldnt close the tab or window. it did not ask for money like most other people with this malware, at least in the time id allowed it to be there. After i got a quick glimpse of the message i shit a few bricks, then immediately forced a shut down the computer and disconnected power. They had my ip address, and a pictured snapped on my webcam of the wall. What are the odds that this is actually the FBI, because they did not ask for money, and should i be ok to plug in and turn on the computer or should i pitch it in hopes they didnt get enough info in that amount of time to find me

Answer
No way. It's a virus. They're starting to get tricky..
I can tell you have to fix it.
Turn on your computer and choose the safe mode option. When your computer loads go to your system backup and back it up to 1 week prior.. When the back up is done, your computed should run like it did 1 week ago but if not, don't be too cheap to get outside help..
