I'm trying to connect a microphone to my computer....so to connect a microphone with an XLR cable, can I just get 2 separate adapters, (XLR to 1/4" and 1/4" to 1/8") and connect it to my computer? That's the only way I can really think of to do it.
I'm kind of new to all this. Help!

It's tricky with an XLR microphone because it is what's known as "balanced" and the input at your computer is "unbalanced" (bit like me, rofl). I think I've read that if the mic is a stereo one, special soldering is required in the first "jack" that you adapt, to do with the signal and return paths for each channel. I can't tell you how that's done and it may vary from mic to mic as not all XLR connectors are the same (I think). And I also think you need to find a local audio specialist. I don't mean a hi-fi shop either, I mean someone who sells PAs and discos. It may be cheaper to buy a decent mic that can connect straight to a jack, because once you have an adaptor for the XLR mic you have lost the benefits of XLR anyways! I picked up a little info at http://www.balanced.com/faq/balanced.html and someone was asking about adapting XLR to use with a minidisc recorder here: http://forums.dvdoctor.net/archive/index.php/t-33128.html

Problems with microphone ?
studiouspr
I just installed a new sound blaster sound card and im having a problem. My mic just isn't working.
Thing is though, when I go into Control Panel, sounds/audio device, test hardware, it tests and then it suddenly works. Problem is though, after running this I can hear myself breathing, and can't do press to talk.
Anyone got any ideas? Im trying to use ventrillo and just having hard time getting all this working :(
Answer
I think your computer must be having an on-board sound card too. Restart the computer and enter into the bios settings. Disable the on-board sound card which will make your sound blaster card as default and only card available for the computer to chose during the boot up. However for breathing sound Manage the volume control for Microphone from the sound settings. If any feel free to more info the the question.
