How to Enable Remote DesktopRemote Desktop is a very cool tool that enables you to connect to your computerâs desktop from another computer across the network or even the Internet. The most common use for this is when people work from home and they want to run applications on their office computerâitâs typically much easier to use Remote Desktop to connect to your office computer than it is to try to connect to install every application, shared folder, and printer on your home computer. If you want to connect to a computer at your office, contact your IT department. IT will need to configure your computer and make changes to the firewall.

If you want to connect to another computer in your home across your network, follow these steps (youâll need access to an administrator account):

1. On the computer you want to connect to, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

2. Make note of the Computer name (listed halfway down the page). Then, under Tasks, click Remote settings.

3. If all your computers are running Vista, click Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication. If you have some earlier versions of Windows that you want to use to connect to this computer, click Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop.
4. Click Select Users.

5. In the Select Users dialog, click the Add button. Type the name of the user you want to grant access to, and then click OK. Repeat this step to add more users.

6. Click OK twice.

Windows Vista will automatically open the necessary exception in Windows Firewall. Now, you are ready to use Remote Desktop to connect to the computer from another computer.

If you need to enable Remote Desktop on a computer that you can remotely manage but doesnât yet have Remote Desktop turned on, follow these steps:

1. Use Regedit to open the registry of the remote computer.
2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server.
3. Set fDenyTSConnections to 0, and create it if necessary. Itâs set to 1 by default, which disables it.

I'm using xp pro and my remote desktop use to work then I updated my routers firmware linksys wrt54g and I updated remote desktop to 6.0 And it quit working so I rolledback the firmware on my router and remote desktop to 5.1 and it still doesn't work My router is port forwarded to the correct port and windows firewall is allowing it as well. Why could it have stopped working and can someone tell me how to get it back. If you need anymore info let me know
I changed my default port from 3389 and the port I am using is forwarded in the router. RDC Tells me that the client cannot connect to the remote computer. also the router is still pointed to the computer I am trying to connect to.

Answer
Check that the forwarded port is still pointing to the correct internal IP address. If you reset the router after the firmware change, DHCP might have assigned the computer with remote desktop a different IP than it had previously, so the port would not be forwarding to the correct place.

Try telnetting from another PC to your IP on that port and see if you're getting a connection at all. And if you haven't already, try rebooting the PC to make sure that the remote desktop service is running properly.
