info on web/computer programming?

Cy Howard

My ultimate vision is to start a company that handles website and software design on a personal as well as business level. In the meantime though I would just like to break into the field.

I was hoping someone on here could send me in the right direction as to what type of degree and what programming languages I would need to pursue.

All advice is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Good day to you! First of all, think first the course you want to choose. Since you decide to choose a computer-related course, I gonna tell you that this type of business requires patience and time. But because this is the path you want to choose, I just give you my opinion and you just decide if it is okay for you. By the way, I am a programmer/developer of an IT solution here in the Philippines.

The type of degree that is best suited for you is Computer Science because this type of course focused in softwares and detailed programming language are being taught here. Or you can choose Information Technology though it is more focused in creating system applications.

Since you want to build a company that handles website and software design. You should prefer these following programming languages.

For website development:

Try to study in details in PHP, aspx, asp, etc for creating dynamic pages, Javascript, jquery, ajax, and of course HTML and XML. These are the basic foundation you should do to learn in building websites. If you are now an advance programmer, try to use a PHP framework rather than a customize native PHP since PHP frameworks are much easy to code than the latter. Examples of PHP frameworks are codeIgniter, cakePHP, etc.

For building systems or software application:

Try to study in Visual Basic 6, C, C++, C#, Java SE, and the famous for today is VB.NET. These are High-level programming languages (except for C, C++) that are very easy to understand and very useful in this type of business. Many tutorials are available in the internet if you want to self study. Try this link: http://www.w3schools.com

They explain very good in terms of the programming languages stated above. I hope that I helped you and just follow the path you want to choose.

question for vb.net pretty easy?

so i want to get the time from a zip code lets say the user enters "11223" zip code (brooklyn, new york) i want it to show the time zone example 5:56 and lets say i get this number: 21:51:00 +0000 (ny time) how would i use that to tell the time bec. when i write label1.text=21:51:00 +0000 it just shows the number not the time. i also used datetime.now that just get the time from your computer. lets the some1 wrote zip code in california so it wouldn't be right thanks for reading

Answer
As with any problem it helps to understand as much as possible the details. In this case it means learning what a ZIP code (Zone Improvement Program Code) is and what the numbers mean.

But first you could consider a brute force approach to solving your timezone issue. This is where you would get a list of every single zip code and place it in a relational database. The data base would allow you to cross reference a given zip code to its destination post office location. Using this location info you would then cross reference its state location to a given time zone.

The brute force approach will work but requires a large amount of data.

To shrink this data down to size you can read about the ZIP code and quickly find out that the first three digits of the ZIP code identify a Sectional Center Facility (SCF) where mail destined for a specific geographical area is first sent on its way to its final destination. These presort locations handle mail for a large areas within a given state which you can then equate to a given time zone.

Because you don't care about a city within a given timezone but rather just the state the SCF section of a ZIP code will greatly shrink the size of the database by identifying a given state.

Thus you only need to consider the first three digits of the zip code.
