i just want to know: how exactly does it work, what does it do for the computer? Does having a very good processor make much of a difference, and in what area does it make a difference? i also see things such as dual processors, and plural processor? i dont understand and just want someone to explain to me about them. Also, what are the leading processors on the market, and their prices?

The processor is the brain of the computer. Information is sent there, processed and sent out again. Every time you type a letter, or open a file, the command is sent to the processor, translated, then sent back to be viewed. The processor is the absolute most important part of any PC, and it makes a difference with literally everything you do. Multi-core processors are processors that function with multiple processing units inside of them. They run faster by splitting a single job between each core and easing up congestion.
The current processors are intel's i3, i5, and i7 brands, and AMD's 9 series. Intel is by far the superior, in a price to power comparison.

I am in the middle of researching for a computer and as I was looking I realized I don't know much about cpu`s I know it is a big part of your computer. I want to know what would be best for me and the fastest? I am going to be going to college and I do alot of research sometimes I will watch movies and mostly download things from the school website. I just want to know what would be the fastest and best one for me and some info about it.

Without a doubt, the best processor on the market right now is the Intel Core i7. It's just...the fastest for your dollar. If you were to get an i7 system, it would be relevant for the longest period of time possible for a computer by today's standards.
If you're unfamiliar with a lot of computer terminology, then I'm not sure how much this will help you, but I'd suggest starting with the Overview sheet from Intel itself. It may explain why, exactly this is the best chip you can get right now:
