what's the difference between software, hardware, computer and electrical engineering?

simba says

I've been trying to research this but I'm more confused than when I started. I need all the info in one place. how I now understand it:

- Electrical Engineer - does hardware and sorftware but not with computers, just other electrical devices in general (tv's, etc)

- Computer Engineer - Is the category separated into two parts:

1. Hardware Engineer - makes the hardware. like builds the plastic and puts it together
2. Software Engineer - Puts programs into the hardware and...programs it.

...am I on the right track? I'm not sure I am... could someone help if I'm not?

Answer
In the context of the other disciplines you ask about, Hardware Engineering is NOT the plastic, etc. That falls to the packaging engineer, usually someone with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. The (computer) Hardware Engineer is involved with selecting the chips on the circuit board, power supplies, issues like EMI suppression, etc. He/she is not necessarily a programmer, although they do need to be aware of the operating system to be used, among other programming-related concerns, since the hardware they select and design into the system tends to be inclined toward one OS or another.

You do have the Software Engineer about right. (While they often have a degree in electrical engineering, they usually aren't applying Ohm's law anymore. They have studied that stuff, but moved on.)

Electrical engineers can and DO work "with computers".

Computer engineer is a very general term. Could mean any of the other three disciplines. Just like an "automotive engineer" could be a specialist in one of any number of very different disciplines.

Problems with Mirus computer?

KittyKat

I bought a computer in Dec from Sears for my husband for christmas. We got everything set up on New Years Eve and after a couple of days working with RoadRunner, were able to get his system up and running.

Then a couple of days ago, he went to get on his computer and he can't do squat !! It says the product key is invalid so we pull out his software and, low and behold, there is NO key listed on anything !!

There is a message at the lower right that says "This copy of Windows Is Not Genuine" *grrrrr* That was one reason we bought it so it would have the same system as mine. We can, of course, buy one from the computer company (box appears to connect us to them ~ whole site is worthless & no help)

I have written to Sears tonight and am awaiting a reply. Now I don't trust anything they downloaded on this system so we will box it up and return it to Sears with a big NO THANKS. Who is Equus Computer Systems? Anyone else have problems like this? Suggestions?
I'm not talking about the serial number, I'm talking about the Product Key # for the software. It isn't on the CD or the Windows Vista booklet that came with it and normally, there is a Product Key # because you have to enter it in order to use it and register it under your name.

We got the Windows Work 8.5 with the system and it has it's own Product Key # label on the paper sleeve it is in. It's the only one in the whole package that does.

Answer
I can only share this little info from the net .
Equus Computer Systems, Inc. is an American computer hardware and services company based in Minnetonka, Minnesota. It is the leading supplier of whitebox computers to the value-added reseller channel[2], though it also sells the Nobilis brand of PCs to many corporate customers as well as various custom computers to independent software vendors. It is an employee-owned private company, formerly majority-owned by Andy Juang.
