IBM Think Pad
Windows XP
when turning on the laptop the first screen shows the logo for IBM thinkpad windows xp
then reverts to a black screen w/the following info: we apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully....etc
the options to choose from are: safe mode, safe mode w/networking, safe mode w/command prompt, last known good configuration, start windows normally
If you select any of the above it does not help
a blue screen also comes up w/ "unmountable_boot_volume" if you select nothing
I have a PC Med-Kit disk that I was told should fix the problem but to no avail
I need to try and retrieve applications/items from the hard drive so I can move them to the replacement laptop.
The disk that I have will not boot up, it's like the computer doesn't recognize it
Answer
1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5.At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.
6.At the command prompt, type exit , and then press ENTER to restart your computer.
This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Answer
Sounds like a hardware issue. A few streps to try:
- First step it to always unplug the machine from the wall when working inside the case.
- Unplug all external devices from the computer except the monitor and the keyboard.
(FROM HERE ON YOU NEED TO BE COMFORTABLE WORKING ON ELECTRONICS TO PROCEED) (SEE YOUR MOTHERBOARD MANUFACTURES WEBSITE FOR DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS) (I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGE INCURRED)
- Unplug all devices from the motherboard except maybe the CDRom that you are trying to boot from.
- Take out the CMOS battery and leave out for a few minutes.
- Put the CMOS into failsafe, or reset, mode via onboard jumper.
- Put CMOS battery back in and plug the computer back into the wall.
- Try powering up the system and see how far you get.
Like I said previously you need to be a little confident with working with the internal components of computers to do most of this but this is the bast way to diagnose the problem. If you still have issues after following the steps then you might have deeper issues. The motherboard itself might be at fault.
