I have a Dell desktop running Windows XP. When I turn on the computer, I get a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen for 10 minutes before Windows starts loading. Why does it take so long to start the computer?

your computer might have a lot of junk programs that start together with your windows xp. try downloading and installing this free program: http://www.mlin.net/files/StartupCPL_EXE.zip
after installing, uncheck unnecessary programs that start with your computer, like messengers. just be careful not to uncheck programs that go with audio and video.
if that don't work, delete junk from the following:
- start> control panel> internet options > delete all internet files
- start> accessories > system tools > disk cleanup (do this for every hard drive)
whenever you use a program, sometimes it makes a new copy of the document you are working on when you save it; when you save 4 times, you have 4 copies in the temp folder. thus, it is good to clean.
after cleaning, defragment the drives; start> accessories> system tools> disk defragmenter
there are programs that automate these:
- a good cleaning program is ashampoo's winoptimizer
- a good defragmenter is diskeeper, unlike windows' defrag, diskeeper allows you to defrag all drives at the same time
- then a good app is tunexp1.5; you can download it via http://www.download.com/TuneXP/3000-2086_4-10290928.html?tag=pub
install tunxp and check options from the memory and file system, then last check ultra fast booting; after that, tunexp will rearrange your boot files and defrag; when the pop up dos window disappears, reboot to see if it is faster.
another good free app is autopatcher; microsoft has just stopped the project. but you can get it from http://downloads.littlbuger.info/index.php?cid=114; it updates windows xp and there are many useful tweaks that makes windows work faster. it is just a big file

My laptop is suddenly not recognizing my ethernet cord :-(. When I right click the network icon(computer things with the red X) and click diagnose and repair it says a cable is not plugged into the network adapter "local area connection". I live on a college campus so I don't have a router or anything we just use ethernet cords. Help help help! Lol

just like diagnosing any other brand computer. pressarios are pretty reliable and of course LAN is faster and more secure than wifi, but less convenient.
try your computer and your cable on another wall jack. This will tell you if it's a bad cable to your apartment or YOUR computer.
Use another persons laptop with YOUR cat6 cable. This will tell you if it's a bad cable
Use another persons cat6 cable with YOUR computer.
If another persons computer works with your cable in your wall jack, the issue is your computer. reinstall your nic driver. It may be called broadcomm
go into dos and ping 127.0.0.1 and see if it times out
go into ipconfig and see if you get info including a MAC address. If you don't get a reply, you may have to buy a new motherboard. The NIC is integrated on almost all but the most expensive laptops.

If it's bad (hope it isn't) I'd make friends with a comp sci major. If he installs it for you it'll cost you a hundred plus giving him an incentive 50-100). If you take it to a shop, it will be cheaper to buy a new computer. hope it's just a driver issue!
