I have installed a Belkin N+ Wireless router at a remote location and the Belkin N+ Wireless USB Network adaptor on my Desktop. Although the computer detects a good signal I cannot connect to the internet. Windows says there is no connection?

You haven't set up the router yet. The first time you connect to your router it has to be through a cable. Then go to 192.168.1.1 in your browser address line, enter ID and password and set up the router.

how do i remotely shutdown a mac computer connected to a different internet connection from my laptop?
Q. my laptop is running ubuntu 10.04. I am connected to a different network via wi-fi, but the mac is connected to the internet by ethernet cable on a different connection.

Alrighty. Here we go. First off, enable remote login on the mac. System Preferences -> Sharing -> check remote login. Click on remote login too so the details are brought up in the right-hand pane. It'll say something like "To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh username@192.168.1.1". If your laptop was connected to the same network as your desktop, we could stop right here. But, it's not - so there are a few extra steps. You said your desktop is connected via ethernet. This means it's not behind a router so we don't have to forward any ports in your router settings. So, on your mac, go to google, and type in "what is my ip". Go to the site and write down this IP Address. Now, open terminal in ubuntu and type "ssh yourusernameonyourmac@youripaddressfromthesite", replacing those with your info, of course. Type in your password for the username on your mac, and you should now be logged in remotely to your mac. Now type "sudo shutdown -h now" This will shutdown your mac right away. For more options, like restarting or changing the time when the shutdown should occur, type "man shutdown". I hope this helped! Email me if you have any more questions.
