I have an HP Compaq Presario CQ60 that I just bought about a year ago. My battery is already telling me I should consider replcing it, and the charge only lasts for about 45 minutes. How long should a laptop battery last before it should need to be replaced? Thanks.

Answer
I used to work for a big name computer company & usually received a lot of call regarding your issue.
Batteries comes w/ a standard 1yr warranty w/c means the expected life time of battery is 1 year.

FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.

I'm not sure if your laptop is still in warranty or not?
If it is, I would advice you to call HP's toll-free hotline number (1-800-474-6836) for further assistance from the Phone Tech Support Team. Make sure to write down the name of the person who will get your call. Tell them the battery is not taking charge & your using your sister's charger b'coz the one that came with your laptop is broken so you need them to send you a replacement for the battery, the charger & the power cord.

FYI, which ever country your call will be routed to, please be patient & polite to the person who will take your call. After all, you are the one calling them for assistance with whatever issue you are having with your portable computer. Make sure to speak your name clearly (spell it, if need be) & provide all the info needed & asked for. They are trained professionals for handling simple matters, so I believe they should be able to assist you w/ any issue as long as IT IS WITHIN THEIR SCOPE OF SUPPORT. It depends on the company but be cooperative because these phone technicians have a specific handle time to be able to resolve the issue of a caller, so please do not be a jerk. Listen carefully to their instructions & follow it, because IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW MORE, then WHY CALL FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
If your computer's 1-yr Standard Limited Warranty has ALREADY EXPIRED, then ask them politely & talk to them in a friendly manner, for they are there to listen and PROVIDE YOU BASIC INFORMATION as much as they can.
Best time to call, after midnight Pacific Time.

Additional info:
FYI, laptop, as the name itself... well, I really don't use it on my lap b'coz sometimes our leg, the bed cover or some clothing may already be blocking the air vent without our knowledge.
Also, if your computer is running a lot of applications that means that the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) is moving very fast and any minute (small) movements of your legs creates vibrations inside (which we wont see from the outside) that causes damage to the HDD discs, and eventually in a long time (when the damage is too much and in some cases the HDD makes a sound) the hard drive will crash. So, if your laptop came with a HDD protection utility, just like what Toshiba and HP has, you can always lower down the sensitivity level to level 2 or 1 but never completely disable the protection utility to prevent the HDD from getting damage from the inside and use the computer on a stable surface. Now, like what I always tell my customers, to always create a restore point (every last day or first day of the month) and make sure that you constantly back-up any important pictures, documents or files from your HDD to a Flash Drive/Thumb Drive or writable DVD±R or an external HDD, so that you will not lose any of these info just in case something bad happens.

As you know, dust is almost always in the air. Use a flash light to check in the air vents from time to time for accumulated dust might have clogged in the air passage way within the laptop itself.
If you feel no air coming out, then have the fan changed b'coz it's not working anymore. Check the bottom of your computer, it usually has rubber pads that provides ample space between the laptop case bottom and the table. For the computers that I have used, these rubber pads provide enough clearance for ventilation for the hot air though it's not enough for me. It never hurts to be cautious, so for my own laptop, I bought a $15 2-fan Cooler Master U2 Cooling Pad from www.MicroCenter.com to help flush away the heated air from the bottom air vents of my laptop. Cool thing about the Cooler Master U2 is that you can position the fans on the right spot for better ventialation. When travelling, if you detach the easily detacheable dual fan, you can use the aluminum frame as a protection for your laptop's LCD screen when inside the bag.

My computer isnt charging, is it the adapter or the computer?

D

So recently my computer has stopped charging. At first I had to mess with the computer adapter to get it to charge but now it just won't charge at all. My question is could it be the ac adapter that's nothing working or is it the computer battery itself or maybe something else? What should I do. I'm on a low budget right now so hoping this isn't costly!

-I've had the computer a little over a year.
-the light on the adapter ia green and not flashing.
-I do plug in this charger at night and sometimes have it plugged in when im using it. I know that's bad!
Thanks in advance for the advice!
It's an Acer Aspire by the way!

Answer
You are misinformed on the plugged in and using it but let's go to the charge issue. Have the jack on the computer checked. That and the plug on the cord that plugs into it. They are the typical suspects. They are the weakest points in the charging system because they are subject to easy damage simply by poor design.

Easy to replace with the proper info had by watching a youtube video on the topic. But if you aren't good with small electronics then I recommend you take your lappy to a local computer repair shop.

You need to be organized with all of the screws when taking the thing apart, as well as other basic skills for the job at hand.
