Can anyone provide more details about a computer company called HEC?

Sarcasm

I've found a couple parts for my computer build from HEC, but I've never heard of them. The info on their website is kind of shady, and the grammar isn't the best I've seen. I found a 585-watt power supply from them on Newegg for $25, which raises a serious red flag. So I need to know are they reliable? Can I trust buying from them?

Answer
Their website:
http://www.hec-group.com.tw/

HEC is a large manufacturer of power supplies, PC cases, rackmount chassis, etc. http://www.hec-group.com.tw/info/

They are not well known because they supply more to OEMs and system builders. With a small retail market, they spend little for advertising and promotion.

The cheap unit they are selling at Newegg is a "no frills" OEM type. There is no SLI or Crossfire support, efficiency is less than 80%, no 8-pin 12V EPS and no PFC; thus, it usually gets unfavorable review. But I would expect it to satisfactorily perform for what it is designed for.

I have very satisfactory experience with HEC's retail power supplies. I have the 550W model w/ active PFC and two units of the 480W model with passive PFC.

Whats the difference between the intel core i5 and i7 processors?

Q. I'm shopping for parts for my first gaming computer build and I was wondering what is the difference between the Intel i5 processors and the i7. I'm going to play games like Skyrim and GTA4. Should I get the i5 or i7. Any info about Intel Processors would be great. Thanks.

Answer
For a desktop, the two primary differentiating features are Hyper-threading and the L3 cache size.

There's also differences between processor generations. 1st generation Core i series processors (model numbers have 3 digits) are based on the Nehalem microarchitecture and have either 45nm or 32nm lithography. 2nd gen processors (4 digits, 1st digit is a 2) are based on the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture, which is a substantial performance improvement over Nehalem and incorporates gaming-acceptable graphics (if you're not playing anything under 6 years old) as well as a substantial average power reduction. 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge, 4 digits, 1st is a 3) have a slight performance improvement over 2nd gen, a substantial graphics improvement (almost acceptable for low settings on new games) and a substantial power reduction. 4th gen (Haswell, 1st digit is a 4) has a fair performance improvement, a very substantial graphics improvement (best ones compete with mid-range graphics cards) and a very significant average power reduction.

Anyway, on desktops, i5's are quad-core processors with 6MB L3 cache and turbo-boost and no hyper-threading. i7's are quad-cores with 8MB L3 cache, turbo-boost and hyper-threading.

Hyper-threading is the ability for one CPU core to utilize unused resources so it can handle 2 threads at once, making the i7 capable of handling 8-way multitasking like a boss, as long as the tasks are capable of utilizing hyper-threading. Most games as of yet are not able to use it, but in the near future they probably will.

For today's games, you won't notice much of a difference in performance between an i5 and an i7, but for games 2 years from now you probably will notice a difference.
