Q. my laptop is running ubuntu 10.04. I am connected to a different network via wi-fi, but the mac is connected to the internet by ethernet cable on a different connection.

Answer
Alrighty. Here we go. First off, enable remote login on the mac. System Preferences -> Sharing -> check remote login. Click on remote login too so the details are brought up in the right-hand pane. It'll say something like "To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh username@192.168.1.1". If your laptop was connected to the same network as your desktop, we could stop right here. But, it's not - so there are a few extra steps. You said your desktop is connected via ethernet. This means it's not behind a router so we don't have to forward any ports in your router settings. So, on your mac, go to google, and type in "what is my ip". Go to the site and write down this IP Address. Now, open terminal in ubuntu and type "ssh yourusernameonyourmac@youripaddressfromthesite", replacing those with your info, of course. Type in your password for the username on your mac, and you should now be logged in remotely to your mac. Now type "sudo shutdown -h now" This will shutdown your mac right away. For more options, like restarting or changing the time when the shutdown should occur, type "man shutdown". I hope this helped! Email me if you have any more questions.

Good Luck!

How can I use the same settings and share the same files with different users on a Mac?

Xtreme

I have a Mac and I want to set up my laptop to have two user accounts. One for business and the other for personal. I want to use the same settings I already have for the new account as well as have access to certain files. Help?

Answer
System Preferences > Accounts. Click the + at the bottom and make a new user account, put a check to "Allow user to administer this computer". Next, how to share settings:

You have two choices of methods:
1: This way always works -- Set up all the preferences (how things look and work) in that account manually. That might take all of 15 minutes.
2: This way might work -- Copy your first account's Library/ Preferences folder to Users /Shared. Log out, log in as the new user. Copy the Shared / Preferences to your Library folder. Confirm to replace the existing Preferences folder. Open Disk Utility. Repair permissions. Restart. If it is successful, you spent 5 minutes. If not, you're back to method 1.

Different versions of OS X and various security updates might negate your plans to copy the Preferences folder and use it in the second user account. Logging in as root user and knowing how to change ownership and permissions for all the preferences can resolve that but it is very detailed and should not be done while connected to the Internet, as root user login leaves the system vulnerable to remote attack.

Now, how to share documents... you can't keep documents available to all users without also making them available to the whole world, but if that is what you really want:

You have two choices of methods:
1: Put all documents in Users /Shared. Set iTunes to use a folder at Users /Shared. When you use iMovie, iDVD, and other applications to make a new project, direct them to put the new project in some folder at Users /Shared. Various third-party applications such as Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Office may need similar solutions. Set Safari or Firefox to download to a folder in Users /Shared.

2: Partition the hard drive, install a second hard drive (desktop), or use an external hard drive. If the "Documents" drive volume (partition or other drive) is formatted Mac file system, open a Finder window, Get Info on the drive volume, put a check at the bottom of the Info window to "Ignore ownership on this volume". If the "Documents" drive volume is formatted DOS file system (FAT32), it has no permissions, so it is good-to-go. As in method 1, set applications to use some music, movie, or whatever folder on the "Documents" drive volume. Set Safari or Firefox to download to a folder on the Documents drive volume.

You can also keep documents in a "sparseimage" (in Disk Utility Help, search for "secure image") with password protection that is available to all users who know the password. That means they are not available to anyone except by password. The hitch is that the only way you can see, change, or otherwise use any of the documents is if you enter the password and mount the image. Then all the documents are available to anyone until you "eject" the mounted disk.
