I'm a senior in high-school and I love computers and technology. I feel like computer engineering is the right degree for me but I would really like to know what I can do with that degree. Could I work for Mac engineering the next iPhone? Could I work Infinity engineering the coolest car technologies? I really need to know the possibilities I have in getting the degree so that I can set goals before I go off to pursue my degree and start my future.I need some info! Thanks!

How good is majoring in Computer Engineering?

Please, tell me how good Computer Engineering is, in terms of starting salaries, demand, etc. If possible, please rate it on a scale of 1 - 10, and PLEASE don't tell me I should go for what am naturally good at, talent, bla bla, cos am excellent with computers and my mind is made up.
Please, also compare it with Computer science and IT. Thanks.

Computer Engineering in my mind would rate a 9. (Doctor being a 10). If you take a look on Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com you will find MANY jobs out there that a computer engineering(CE) background can accomplish. In my mind a CE is a jack of all trades kinda. For instance CE's can do programming jobs, hardware jobs, IT jobs, etc.
As for salary it ranges. I believe entry level salary average for CE is around 59k/yr starting and then blooms from there. I have seen CE jobs asking for 5yr experience offering 100-160k/yr salary. I personally am a recent grad of CE and in my graduating class ALL CE majors found jobs BEFORE graduation or were accepted into grad school.
Now comparitive to computer science(CS) or IT... CS is mostly, 95% of the time programming. They make roughly the same amount of money starting, maybe a little less, but the future outlook for them is still great. However you will not be doing anything hardware related. So no circuits or chip design. IT is fixing computers. They do some programming but not much. I have good friends in all 3 areas IT, CS and CE.
The one in IT is fixing computers and finding problems in networks and solving them. They make a great starting salary but your pay wont move much from there. Because there is little to learn about fixing a machine once you know it...
As for CS and CE they are doing different jobs either gov. or contractor. Both making good money. The reason for CE and CS salaries to increase more then IT is because they are constantly learnign new things and new software. For example in CE you are design and researching the newest and greatest chip.
I believe that as a CS you can program and maybe do something else... As IT you will do little programming and fix computers and problems. However as CE you will be able to do all of that PLUS do some work as a an electrical engineer(EE). For instance, I had a co-op as an EE, and now working in an CS based job. I can do both things which is what I love about CE. I hope this helps some and if you need more info just message me.
