Answer
You said old computer monitor. Some of these old monitors lose memory settings when unplugged from the power and have to be reset through their respective menus.

Nothing should have changed as far as your computers are concerned, but you can check the screen resolution by going to Control Panel. Select Display utility and then the Settings tab. The color depth and screen res info should be given there. Make sure it hasn't changed. If it hasn't, then you just need to go back through the monitor's menu and reset it to the right size both vertically/horizontally. These size adjustments may require you to also touch up the vertical and horizontal centering position.

What features should I look for when shopping for a dive computer?

beachy

I'm shopping for a wrist dive computer and have seen price ranges from $200 to $1400. Can any experienced scuba divers out there tell me what features are really important to them? What you use the most? What you may have paid extra for but never use? I don't want to unnecessarily splurge, but I want to make sure if I'm spending a couple hundred on a computer, I'm gonna buy a good one, even if it is a bit more. That being said, the cheaper the better!

Answer
Most computers on the market offer the same basic functionality. In addition to the obvious decompression status monitoring, nearly all will display water temp. and have conservatism adjustment (e.g. for altitude dives). They will also all have some kind of planning mode, and a (limited) logbook function, and display post-dive info like surface interval, time-to-fly, etc.

What additional features you should look for in a dive computer really depends what you want to get out of your diving, now and in the foreseeable future. Obviously, the more features you want, the more you can expect to pay, but having a good idea of what you want will make it a lot easier to figure out which computer is best for you. The following questions may focus your attention on what's important to you:

-- Do you have any visual limitations (e.g. myopia, astigmatism)?
If so, a large, clear (maybe rectangular rather than circular) display would probably be better for you.

-- Do you want audible alarms (max. depth, ascent rate warnings, etc.)?
May be useful in warm water, but often nearly impossible to hear while wearing a thick hood in cold water. If available, a 'vibrate' alarm might be more useful in the latter case.

-- Do you want a date/time function?
Not essential, but nice to time-stamp the logbook entries, and useful if you're taking the computer on a multi-day dive safari, where it can also do duty as an alarm clock and watch.

-- How do you prefer to access the surface menus (push-buttons or wet-contacts)?
Personal bias: I hate wet-contacts, and prefer multiple single-press push-buttons to a single push-and-hold-for-X-or-Y-seconds timed button.

-- Are you intending to dive regularly in limited-vis water, or at night?
If yes, a backlight function would be useful -- 'glow-in-the-dark' phosphorescent screens are OK, but generally not as bright/clear as backlights.

-- Do you want to be able to change the battery yourself?
Not all computer designs allow this -- some you have to send back to the shop, or even the factory (not useful for divemaster/instructors in third-world countries, or dive tourists on week-long dive safaris!)

-- Do you want the computer to show air supply information?
If yes, then you may wish to consider a hose-mounted computer rather than wrist-mounted, for the lower price -- but air-integration is really only a practical option if you also have your own regulator (to attach the hose/wireless transmitter)

-- Do you want the computer to have a digital compass?
My feeling is that this is something of a gimmick. Except when I was actually teaching compass skills, I've hardly ever used a compass on any of my dives (even the ones in cold dark quarries)

-- Do you want to be able to review your dives in detail afterwards?
If yes, then being able to download the computer's logbook to a PC/laptop-based dive logbook might be useful.

-- Are you intending to get nitrox-certified, or already nitrox-certified?
If yes, but you only plan to dive nitrox within air limits ('safety' advantage), a 'max. depth' alarm function would be useful (set to your nitrox mix's MOD, e.g. 33 m for EAN32).
If yes, and you want the extra bottom time ('time' advantage) and/or hope one day to learn to use a semi-closed (fixed %O2) rebreather, you'll need a full nitrox-compatible computer (programmable from at least 21 to 40% O2)

-- Are you thinking of getting into decompression- or even trimix-diving at some stage?
If yes, then the ability to switch between 2 or more gas mixes during the dive, and/or the ability to switch to a simple 'depth+timer' mode may be useful (although there may be a 24-48 hour surface interval lockout before you can switch back to computer mode)

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me through Y!A if you have any further questions.
