Info on majoring in Computer Hardware Engineering!?

Hennjer A

I'm about to be a senior and i'm thinking about majoring in Computer Hardware Engineering. I have already done some research but would like to hear more about this major. For Example, How easy or hard is it to find a job, what are some skills that i should have, and how is the work environment. When i was round 13 (I'm 16 now, will graduate at 17) i lasted around a month learning about the computer's hardware, i got to the point where i knew how to build a computer parts for parts and i knew how the computer works. Do you guys think that this knowledge will help me out in this major? I wish i could get a good paying job right after graduating from college.

Answer
Professionals in computer engineering, called hardware engineers or computer engineers, create and test the physical components of computer systems, such as circuits, chips and boxes, as well as peripherals, such as routers, keyboards and printers. Their developments are used in many industries, including telecommunications, entertainment, and computer manufacturing. The career offers many advantages over other jobs.

Salaries
Computer hardware engineers earned high salaries, averaging $101,360 per year, or $48.73 per hour, as of May 2011, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even the lowest-paid 10 percent made up to $62,400 per year, or $30 hourly, while the top earners reached or exceeded $147,610 yearly, or $70.97 per hour. These earnings were well above the average of $45,230 per year, or $21.74 per hour, for all occupations in the country. The wages of the engineers were also above the mean salaries of all computer and math occupations, which were an annual $78,730, or $37.85. They were also above the averages for all engineering jobs, which ran $77,120 yearly, or $37.08 hourly.
Education
Six-figure salaries are achievable after many years of education, such as for lawyers, who require four years of law school after college, or for doctors, who have four years of medical schools, and three to eight years of residency. Computer engineers can start on the high-earning path with only a four-year bachelorâs degree for most entry-level positions. A masterâs degree can increase pay by 16 percent, according to the 2011 degree salary survey by Georgetown University. Students also develop the useful skill of computer programming, since software knowledge is needed for engineers to get their computer hardware components to function. In addition, they can gain practical experience in school through internships or co-ops.
Opportunities
Professionals in computer engineering will not want for jobs, with an expected average growth rate of 9 percent from 2010 to 2020, according to the statistics bureau. Though the outsourcing of computer manufacturing to foreign countries may affect employment, many companies are now contracting out their hardware designs. This provides opportunities for those working in computer consulting firms. From their present positions, hardware engineers who gain experience or show administrative acumen can become computer managers, who enjoy greater challenges, more responsibility, and higher pay. As of 2011, computer managers made an average $129,350 per year, or $62.29 per hour.
Intangibles
Computer engineering careers are admired as being on the forefront of technology, influencing such developments as the processing power of tablets, the entertainment capabilities of cell phones, and the speed of financial transactions. As with other engineering jobs, the job is considered prestigious, providing intellectual development and challenging work in a professional environment. Hardware engineers require creative thinking to come up with technological and scientific discoveries that affect everyday consumers. What they do benefits society and the countryâs ability to remain competitive on the global stage.

Well I'm building my first computer i was suggested with these components if anyone would take a look and tell me what else i may need.

Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156043

I just want to make sure this is what i need.I've already got a hardrive and a Dvd drive. Also when buying these computer components do they come with all the connects i need?I've asked about this before i just need to make sure!Thank you

Hm thanks,I got my windows xp professional disk with service pack three will this work?I really don't want vista.

Answer
Karen, what will this computer be used for? Surfin' the 'net? Using office programs for business? Playing games that belong on the Disney channel?

If so, GREAT! If not, you need to consider your source of information, because this budget computer setup is just for the above.

I realize I sound critical. Based on the components you listed, it would seem as if someone tried to save money, (Good thinking! I always try to base my decisions, on the 'Best Bang for the Buck' theory!),
but didn't know what components were compatible, nor do they know much about computer components.

The Foxconn M7VMX-K mobo, (Motherboard), uses DDR2 Sdram at 800MHz. This is also called PC6400. I'm not even sure if PC5300,
(DDR2 at 667MHz) would work on this mobo. If it does, it will slow things down.

The Foxconn mobo above also uses the GeForce 7050 Southbridge chip. It also uses the nForce 610 Northbridge chip. These chips are part of the Northbridge/Southbridge chipset.
They are budget, SO yesterdays news, and are practically worthless.

The ram is a budget ram memory. I realize it's probably based on price, and 'money doesn't grow on trees'. Read on, and I have info that will fix this.

The processor, is a SO yesterday component, also. I read the reviews on Newegg. The guy that replaced a Quad core processor with this one, and didn't see a difference, is on CRACK!
Many games aren't set up for use on a quad core processor. However, this is a multitask processor. There are new games out that use it, and it's great also for using more than FOUR programs at once. This guy has no clue of what he's talking about!

After the Intel Pentium dual core series, they brought out the Core2 Duo. Uses less power, develops less heat, (Heat=Wasted Energy), and has better Instruction Sets. These make it more efficient. Intel processors have evolved way past this point, but a small Core2 Duo is bargain priced now, and will kick an E2200 to the curb!

The GeForce 8500GT with 512MB's of GDDR2 graphics ram, and a 128 bit interface, is for looking at the internet with better graphics, or the disney channel games. 'Won't touch this', is a term that can be readily applied, towards games that are out now, or many of yesterdays games.

Just had a thought. Looking to play Sims2?
Okay, all the above except for the ram memory, would 'do it' for this game. WoW, C:S:S, Cyrsis, and above, Nope!

I realize that computer technology changes exponentially. Follows Moores Law. However, you can do better than this with a little more money.

If you're dead set on the above components, let me at least advise you on the proper ram, and I believe you'll find the price is lucrative also.

5.Graphics card? This is a toughie! Getting a good component for a graphics card, isn't cheap. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4209965&sku=P450-9830

The case above will do. All it's going to do is sit there. However be aware that it is made of THIN metal, and watch your FINGERS. The edges are sharp! How do I know this? Cases in this price range, tend to follow the same guidelines, plus I read the reviews. I have looked at many computer components through the last 20 years, and the same Ol' stuff still applies. You get what you pay for with a computer case.
Should work just fine, however.

Toss the power supply up on a shelf, for when one of your friends power supplies dies, and they need to get stuff off of their computer.
I guarantee you this one will fail, just when you have the most important thing going on, on your computer. Might take some of your computer components with it!

Edit: My Bad! You're going to need a heatsink/fan combo for the processor. Whatever processor you choose. The E2200 uses an LGA 775 socket. You need a heatsink/fan combo that fits that.
You need some thermal paste also. This, is to apply on the top of the processor's case. Goes in between the processor, and the heatsink/fan combo. Transfers heat from the processor to the heatsink. DON'T run a processor without this stuff! It will burn up! (I mean BURN, as in on FIRE!)
