Answer
PuTTy is indeed the best free way to gain access to a terminal (command line interface) on the remote machine.
If you are more comfortable using a graphical interface, then you may want to look into VNC. TightVNC is a good open source implementation of VNC which includes software for both Windows and Linux. Find it at http://www.tightvnc.com/ and read through the documentation for more info.
The basic steps for using it are
1. Enable the VNC server on your friend's computer.
2. If your friend has a router, forward the VNC ports (TightVNC uses 5800 and 5900)
3. Install the TightVNC client on your Windows computer
4. Connect to your friend's computer
The website has more detailed instructions.

how do i keep windows and linux? please ansewr as soon as possible?
joe
ok, i just ordered the linux ubuntu cd off linux.com. and i was wondering. how would i be able to keep windows after i install linux on my computer. i already defragmented the hard drive. but what else do i need to do. i need detailed instructions for every single step no matter how insignificant it may seem. i need to get this right.
also, could anybody who has linux or switched from windows to linux please tell me what they think about it. (ubuntu)\
also, i ordered the desktop edition of ubuntu. will that work on my laptop? (i couldn't find a laptop edition)
one more thing, i checked the ram on my computer and it only has 246 mb of ram. i tried deleting so many things (about 60 or 70 mb) but it still said i only had 246. my hard drive did not even change. it is locked at 28.3 gb. what's wrong? cause i an just about to completely format my hard drive and buy a windows xp cd.
in fact, i will just format my hard drive.
can somebody please tell me how much windows xp home editon costs?

Answer
The first link below explain how to dual boot windows and linux.
The desktop version is the same as the laptop version. Some laptops have limited memory/hard drive and use a smaller version.
The second link explains how to do a graphical install, (the easiest).
The third link has a lot of other info and I suggest that you especially read the FAQs, Switching from windows, and even Terminal Program, (this part may seem foreign but if you are going to stick with linux you will eventually need to know how to use the terminal.)
I use ubuntu and really like it.
