dumb computer! help!?

my boyfriends computer keeps just shutting off whenever he gets on it for more than 5 minutes. he checked for viruses and there isn't any and last night he put in a new video card and some ram. we can't figure anything out! help!
it is a dell inspiron 531 and its only like a couple months old. the fans and everything are running fine, so we don't think it is a heating problem. it just turns off and then restarts itself.

Please give info on the computer - make/model, what version of windows is running, do you get an error or does it just turn off. When you turn it back on do you get a message that windows has to check the hard drive? Did this just start suddenly, or begin a while ago and get worse over time?

*** thanks for the add'l info on the pc. you didn't mention the Windows version, but if it is XP, and it did a Windows Update last week to service pack 3, there is a known problem with that SP that is causing machines with AMD processors to restart repeatedly.

Check in add/remove programs and see if SP3 is there, and if it is, uninstall it.

Looking for a new computer and the PowerSpec looks good and has all the right bells and whistles. I just wonder if the are any good and who makes them.
