Can you download Unix or Linux onto a windows computer?

I am trying to clone an sd card and need to do it through unix or linux using the dd command. I have never used either of these programs before so any help is really appreciated. Can I get unix or linux on my computer and if so where can I get it? Also if you know how to clone an sd card that info will be really helpful too.

Linux or Unix can be installed onto a computer, yes. However, it is not a simple program, but an entire operating system that runs INSTEAD of (not on) Windows. There are a few ports of dd for Windows; you may want to try one of them first

To clone an SD card, you would basically do:

dd if=\\. \E: of=mybackup.img

Then, to write it back, you would do:

dd if=mybackup.img of=\\. \E:


If you would like to try Linux, you may want to start with a LiveCD first, that does not need to be installed. Ubuntu is one such Linux distribution.

To place Active@ KillDisk Pro onto a floppy disk type the following at the command prompt:
COPY G:\KILLDISK.EXE A:
COPY G:\DOS4GW.EXE A:
The above assumes that the G:\ drive is the bootable CD-ROM drive and the A:\ drive is the floppy disk drive.
DOS4GW.EXE is a required file for Active@ KillDisk, Active@ UNERASER and Active@ Disk Image.
