Computer Construction Question?

Mr Sam

Ya in the past I have bought two great quality gaming laptops. The thing is though, their motherboards fried within a year. So I decided I don't want to spend another $700 on another laptop that I can't fix. So since my brother made a excellent computer in 8th grade. I figured I'd ask him to help me. But before I ask him completely I'd like to know just a little bit about computers before I ask him (so I don't look completely dumb) I'm pretty good with computers and know most of the parts, if someone could just explain them to me it would help. Oh and also I'm most likely not going to start out with the computer being like amazing, I'll probably upgrade it later. And I've got only about $500 saved for it, so just lemme know whats important to have good quality for a gaming computer to start, and also roughly the estimated price of it.
Thank you!

Answer
First make sure you realize that this computer is going to have to be a desktop: laptops for the most part have to be assembled in a factory they can't be home built.

Let's run down all the major parts of the computer:

Case - This is the shell that all the parts get stuffed into. For a gaming computer make sure that it has good airflow, also (and this is important) that it looks totally awesome.

Motherboard - If the CPU is the "brain" of your computer, then the motherboard would be the central nervous system. This is the big circuit board that everything gets plugged into and mounted on. For a gaming computer make sure it has room for enough memory and that it is compatible with the CPU you want to use. There are a bunch of other sub parts/terms that go with the motherboard, feel free to email me if you want more information on that.

CPU - The main chip inside the computer, it processes and sorts most of the data that goes through the machine. In recent times multi-core CPUs have become popular, which basically means that you actually have several CPUs built into the same chip that divide the work up to make it go faster. For gaming you're going to want at least 4 cores.

Graphics card - certain applications (namely, video games) started to become so advanced and sophisticated that they were demanding more and more of the CPU's power, leaving nothing left for the rest of the system. Therefore they invented the graphics card: it's a special processor that does nothing but handle the data related to what goes onto your screen. This takes the pressure off of the CPU so that it's free to handle the rest of the computers' tasks. Because video games rely almost exclusively on the graphics card, you need to make sure you get a good one.

Memory (RAM) - These banks of chips hold programs/data while the CPU is using them. The more memory you have the more "space" your CPU has to put stuff it's working on, therefore having a decent amount of memory is usually a performance gain. For gaming it's important to have a good amount of memory, because vgames are extremely mathmatically intense and the programs need holding space for all the numbers they're throwing around.

Hard Drive - This is the permanent storage space for your programs and data. In most cases the important factor is how much data a hard drive can hold, but for gaming you also need to be concerned with how fast the drive is.

Power Supply - This box takes the electricity from your wall outlet, conditions it to a format your computer can use, and then distributes it to all the various parts. The big thing you need to watch out for here is wattage - namely, you need to make sure it's able to keep all the parts juiced when you go full-throttle.

Optical Drive - This is the generic name for the CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/ROM/R/RW/etc/etc/etc/etc,,, drive. Even though it's quickly becoming obsolete, a lot of games are still distributed via disc, so it's good if you have one installed.

Cooling System - the series of equipment that keeps all your parts (especially your CPU) from melting itself. Unless you plan on overclocking (i.e., pushing your CPU beyond the factory specified max speed) then the cooler that came in the box should be more than adequate.

I think that's everything. If there was something specific you wanted more info on, feel free to email me. Good luck and have fun with your new build!

computer related question here.....?

I have a 1.44MB disc that has some info. on it that I need to get but my computer does not have that capability. What is the best way to get that info. and transfer it to my memory stick so that I can update the info and print it if necessay?

Answer
You will have to find someone who has a floppy disk so you can transfer it to your memory stick or either buy a portable floppy disk drive if you have more than one floppy if you have more than one. You might even try taking it to one of your computer stores and getting them to transfer it for you or maybe a friend. Good luck.
