Computer repair help?

A
My old computer quit working awhile ago and I never got it fixed. I was told it was either the graphics card or the motherboard was fried. I just tried to put that graphics card into my new computer and when it started up there were vertical lines all across the screen and after it booted up I couldn't move my mouse or do anything. Does this mean the graphics card is bad or my computer couldn't handle it?
I was also wondering if I could take my ram from my old computer and put it into this computer, there are 2 open spots. Would I have to upgrade things or could I just put them in there and that's it.
Any help is appreciated, Thank you.
